PlayStation Expands Cinematic Universe:
Sony is going full steam ahead with its plan to turn many of its beloved PlayStation franchises into movies and TV shows. We already have the Uncharted movie and The Last of Us HBO series, with Horizon: Zero Dawn and God of War adaptations in the works. And now we know which PlayStation game will jump into live-action next.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a movie adaptation of the best PS4 horror game is in the works. Shazam and Lights Out director David F. Sandberg are set to helm the project, while writer Gary Dauberman, who has penned several horror films including It, Annabelle: Creation (also directed by Sandberg), and The Nun, will rework a script that was originally written. Blair Butler wrote the (really awful) vampire flick The Invitation.
Released in 2015, Till Dawn plays like an interactive slasher film. You take control of eight teenagers as they gather in a remote cabin high in the mountains. Once there, a masked attacker and strange animals known as Wendigos pursue the friendship group.
The hook of Dawn is that each character can live or die based on the player’s choices in their branching narrative. The gameplay consists primarily of quick-time events and simple button presses, making it perfect for inexperienced players.
Until Dawn isn’t a natural fit for a film adaptation, as the game has a deliberately cinematic quality, choosing to focus more on its gripping story rather than deep gameplay. In addition, it featured voice performances and motion capturing by some of the leading actors, including Academy Award winners Rami Malik, Hayden Panettiere, and Meghan Martin.
PlayStation Gem ‘Until Dawn’ Continues to Shine:
Developed by British studio Super Massive Games, Dawn received mostly positive reviews from critics, and we rate it as one of the best horror games you can play, even after all these years.
The game was believed to have surpassed its sales expectations, but the results never materialized. Instead, Supermassive created The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry, which run the same but feature new settings and characters.
Until Dawn may not be the biggest IP in Sony’s stable, but it’s probably the PlayStation game best suited for a big-screen adaptation. There’s no word yet on whether the film will retain the same characters and plot as the original game, but with a writer and director attached, it could go into production fairly quickly so more details are coming soon.
